İnsan hakları ihlallerini yasaklayan çok sayıda uluslararası bildiri ve anlaşmalara rağmen işkence hala dünyanın pek çok ülkesinde büyük bir sorun olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Bu kitap işkence deneyimi olan kişilerin karşı karşıya kaldıkları tıbbi, psikiyatrik ve psikolojik sorunları detaylı olarak ortaya koymakta ve bu kişilerin tedavisi için kullanılan ve kimi zaman birbiriyle çelişen tedavileri gözden geçirmektedir. İşkence deneyimi olan mültecilerin tedavilerini üstlenen evsahibi ülkelerden ve politik baskı ve tehditin sürdüğü ortamlarda işkence görenlerin tedavi edildiği ülkelerden yazarların katkılarıyla hazırlanmıştır. Sunduğu kuramsal ve uygulamaya yönelik bilgiyle işkence görenlerle ilgilenen sağlık çalışanlarının ihtiyaçlarını gideren ve ele aldığı sosyolojik ve politik konularla geniş bir okuyucu kitlesinin ilgisini çeken bu kitap yayınlandığı tarihten bu yana klasik bir kaynak haline gelmiştir.

Doğal afet, savaş ve işkence, gibi kitlesel travma olayları her yıl dünya üzerinde milyonlarca insanı etkilemektedir. Halen, bu travmatik olaylara maruz kalan çok sayıda insanın psikolojik tedavi ihtiyaçlarını maliyet etkiniliği yüksek bir şekilde karşılayacak bir ruh sağlığı modeli bulunmamaktadır. Bu kitap bu sorunu çözmek amacıyla geliştirilen bir ruh sağlığı modelini, bunun uygulamasını, içerdiği tedavi girişimlerini anlatmaktadır. Kitlesel travma deneyimi olan kişilerle DABATEM’in 20 yılı aşkın bir sürede gerçekleştirdiği araştırmaların sonuçlarını gözden geçiren bu kitap travmatik olayların psikolojik etkilerini açıklayan ve bu etkilerin Kontrol-Odaklı Davranış Tedavisi ile üstesinden gelmeyi öngören bir kuramsal model de sunmaktadır. Kitap ayrıca psikolojik travma alanındaki tartışmalı konuları yeni araştırma bulguları ışığında eleştirel bir gözle değerlendirmektedir. Deprem travmasının tedavisine yönelik Kendine Yardım El Kitapçığı’nı ve Terapist Eğitim El Kitapçığı’nı da içeren bu kitap travma mağdurları, ruh sağlığı uzmanları ve politika belirleyiciler için önemli bir kaynak olmaktadır.

Bu kitap işkencenin tanımını davranış bilimleri ve uluslararası hukuk açılarından ele alarak konuya inter-disipliner bir yaklaşım sunmaktadır. Kitap, kendi alanlarında dünyada otorite olarak tanınan bir grup davranış bilimleri, uluslararası hukuk, insan hakları ve halk sağlığı uzmanları tarafından işbirliği içinde hazırlanmıştır. İskencenin uluslararası hukuktaki tanımının bilimsel temellerini inceleyen ilk eserdir. İşkenceye ilişkin sağlam bir kuramsal temele ve bilimsel kanıtlara dayanan bir formülasyon sunarak uluslararası hukukta işkence anlayışına daha bilimsel bir bakış açısı getirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Sunulan psikolojik formülasyon öğrenme kuramlarına dayanmakta ve editörün işkence konusunda 30 yıldan beri yaptığı sistematik araştırmaların verilerinden kaynaklanan “başkalarının kontrolü altında olmanın yarattığı çaresizlik” kavramını içermektedir. Bu formülasyonun sunumundaki amaç bireysel vakalarda hukuki yargılardaki öznelliği azaltmaktır. Bu formülasyon ayrıca aile içi şiddet ve kötü şartlarda özgürlükten yoksun bırakılma gibi birbirinden farklı ortamlarda gerçekleşen kötü muamelelerin niteliğini ve şiddetini daha iyi anlamaya yardımcı olmaktadır. Kitap yine öğrenme kuramları açısından “etkisi arttırılmış sorgulama yöntemleri”ne (“enhanced interrogation techniques”) bir bakış açısı getirmekte ve bu sorgulama tekniklerinin neden işkence tanımına girdiğini açıkladığı gibi genelde işkencenin temel tanımlayıcı özelliklerine de ışık tutmaktadır. Sunulan psikolojik formülasyon işkencenin tanımının yalnızca tutukluluk veya hapis gibi ortamlarda yer alan bir olgu olmadığına, daha önceleri düşünülenden daha geniş bir kavram olduğuna işaret etmekte ve hangi yönlere doğru genişlemesi gerektiğine ilişkin bir fikir vermektedir. Kitap ayrıca utanç ve aşağılanma kavramlarına evrimsel bir bakış açısı getirerek insanlık dışı veya aşağılayıcı muamelelerin neden fiziksel işkence kadar acı ve ızdırap yarattığını açıklamaktadır. Tedavi konusunu doğrudan ele almamakla birlikte, işkence olgusunun psikolojisine ışık tutarak hangi tedavi yaklaşımlarının işkencenin etkilerini gidermekte daha yararlı olacağına dair fikir vermektedir.
